It has been raining heavily in Singapore yet the energy emitted from our discussions with new Ychallengers is more than able to counter balance the misty and moody atmosphere that the rain brings. And so, we’ve managed to meet half of potential new Ychallengers from very different backgrounds with diverse characteristics, leadership, working styles, and aspirations save a common thread: a vision to build a bridge between Vietnamese business and talented youth in Vietnam and beyond. Not to our surprise, many sessions have turned out to be more on how to make Ychallenge 2012 better rather than a simple narration of what you and I did in the past. Still, it is very delighted for us to meet old and new faces, some of whom have been with us since the very first days of Ysummit 2010 and Ychallenge 2011, showing us where we are lacking and how we can move forward together. That is the essence of Yspirit and the manifest of why we need each other.

So, let’s see how a dedicated team to participant relations can enrich our Ychallengers’ experience this year and what difference Ychallenge team from Hanoi can make to our circle of Ychallengers in the capital.

Even if some of you won’t be working closely with us to organize this year competition, stay with us because Ychallenge is a child who needs constant feeding and nurturing. Don’t stay tuned, give us a shout any time you have an idea on how to raise this child better.

Christmas was around its corner with its loving warmth while we gathered on a sunny Sunday morning at 116-118 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai St. on the eighteen of December to be impressed by the short and sweet presentations from our 4 Champions and then engaged in the insightful and inspiring sharing from the passionate speakers during the panel discussion. Many people from different backgrounds and interests (business people, students, working professionals, media, families of contestants etc…) were there with us to share a vision – to build a playground and a lively connections between Vietnamese businesses and young talents local and overseas.

Ychallenge 2011 has made this vision closer to reality by enabling a channel for the 8 Finalists to convince the management at top corporations in Vietnam that we youth are serious about making an impact and we can do it, with passion and with what we’ve learnt. On the other side of the coin, Ychallenge 2011 also proves that management at top corporations are very open to listening to us and supportive in providing opportunities for us to get real-life experience, to contribute while growing ourselves into more able men and women. 

Well, in the end…

Team Real Deal has impressed the management from Becamex IDC with their comprehensive critiques of the current innovative master plan of Binh Duong New City together with their recommendation PERM to ensure the city grow sustainabily in the future.

Team IIPA has successfully convinced the management from PNJ with their detailed implementation plan to improve the launch campaign of Yabling including utilizing mobile apps for more interactions among end users of the products.

DARTeam has left the meeting room at Vinamilk headquarter in District 7 with a clear plan to bring Vfresh fruit juice to kids supported by hard figures and carefull considerations together with a lovely and colorful commercial ads, ready for implementation.

And Giành Chiến Thắng has truly won the hearts of the management at VNG with their engaging presentation on their proposed I square strategy with the suggestion to deploy tag to improve features for Zing Ads, making the service more relevant to users. 

Points are taken. Ideas are absorbed and challenged. Feedback are considered. And most of people involved have thought the whole journey is useful and eye-opening to some extent.  

And yet, as intended, the event is much less about honoring the Champion or expressing condolence to the Runner-up because at the very least, we all take home the EXPERIENCE, which we hope, a lasting one. 

Ychallenge was a DREAM. And when many people dream together, it has become a REALITY. Congratulations and thank you, everyone who has been with us on this journey!

Thử thách trẻ 2011: Ý tưởng kinh doanh độc đáo

TTO – Sáng 18-12, các bạn trẻ Việt Nam và Singapore đã có buổi trình bày đầy ấn tượng về những ý tưởng kinh doanh độc đáo, mới lạ trong buổi chung kết cuộc thi Thách thức trẻ 2011 (Ychallenge 2011).

Đây là một trong những cuộc thi giải quyết tình huống kinh doanh đầu tiên được tổ chức bởi những người Việt trẻ ở Singapore và trong nước nhằm kết nối các bạn trẻ để có thể mang tri thức, sự hiểu biết của mình áp dụng vào các vấn đề kinh doanh thực tế tại các doanh nghiệp Việt Nam.

Trải qua vòng sơ loại (diễn ra online) và vòng bán kết mang tên Thử thách 24 giờ (diễn ra tại Singapore), tám đội dự thi xuất sắc nhất đã trình bày khá ấn tượng về chiến lược kinh doanh sau thời gian du học và qua khảo sát thực tế doanh nghiệp tại Bình Dương và TP.HCM vào ngày 15, 16-12.

Với khả năng phân tích, đánh giá chính xác tình hình hoạt động của doanh nghiệp, đưa ra giải pháp hợp lý để giúp doanh nghiệp nâng cao hiệu quả và vươn ra thị trường thế giới, cả bốn nhóm Giành chiến thắng, IIPA, Darteam và Real Deal đã giành chiến thắng chung cuộc.

Nhóm IIPA với đề tài quảng bá dòng sản phẩm mới của Công ty cổ phần vàng bạc đá quý PNJ đề xuất thiết kế ứng dụng trên điện thoại. Theo đó, người dùng có thể chụp ảnh bộ trang phục của mình hoặc bạn bè, sau đó phối hợp với bộ trang sức của PNJ và chia sẻ với bạn bè thông qua Facebook.

Với đề tài phát triển “thành phố mới” Bình Dương, nhóm Real Deal cho rằng cần giảm thiểu ô nhiễm từ xe hơi, xe gắn máy, khuyến khích người dân sử dụng xe đạp đồng thời đầu tư cho giáo dục, cấp học bổng cho học sinh, sinh viên du học nước ngoài với cam kết trở về Việt Nam phát triển.

Nhóm Darteam với chiến lược phát triển nước ép trái cây cho thương hiệu Vinamilk. Nhóm đã đến nhiều siêu thị tìm mua trái cây và thử các loại nước ép khác nhau sau đó pha trộn lại để tạo ra mùi vị mới. Kết quả là nhóm đưa ra ý tưởng về những loại nước ép hỗn hợp bao gồm cam dây (cam - chanh dây), chanh leo (chanh - dưa leo) và dâu hỗn hợp dành cho đối tượng trẻ em từ 4-9 tuổi.

Trong khi đó, để đạt hiệu quả trong việc quảng cáo trên mạng (Zing Ads), nhóm Giành chiến thắng mong muốn dựa trên thói quen đọc tin tức và những mục mà người dùng thường click vào trên các trang web của Zing để gắn những thẻ (Tag) tương ứng như thẻ thời trang, thẻ thể thao, thẻ âm nhạc… Khi người dùng vào các trang web của Zing sẽ chỉ hiện ra những quảng cáo thích hợp với thói quen và sở thích của mình. Người dùng cũng có thể xóa thẻ hoặc chọn thêm thẻ đúng với sở thích của mình.

Tổng kết cuộc thi Thách Thức Trẻ Ychallenge 2011

Kết nối. Truyền lửa. Khơi dậy đam mê.

Cách đây gần một năm, Diễn đàn Tuổi trẻ Ysummit 2010 đã kết thúc thành công với sự tham dự của 17 diễn giả ưu tú và hơn 200 bạn trẻ Việt Nam tại Singapore. Các bạn đã có cơ hội lắng nghe và chia sẻ đam mê và nhiệt huyết từ những người đi trước là những chuyên gia trong nhiều lĩnh vực khác nhau, đồng thời các bạn cũng nhận thức rõ hơn về vai trò của thế hệ trẻ trong việc đóng góp vào sự phát triển của đất nước. Hội thảo đã đem lại dấu ấn sâu đậm cho không chỉ các bạn sinh viên mà còn cả các diễn giả và nhà tài trợ chương trình. Nhu cầu và thách thức để làm sao đưa tài năng tri thức ở nước ngòai về phục vụ cho sự phát triển của đất nước cũng được nhấn mạnh trong buổi hội thảo.

Thách thức Trẻ Ychallenge 2011 ra đời với mong muốn một lần nữa tạo ra sân chơi cho các bạn trẻ tại Singapore và Việt Nam, giúp các bạn đem tri thức và sự hiểu biết của mình áp dụng vào các tình huống kinh doanh thực tế của các doanh nghiệp tại Việt Nam. Qua ba vòng của cuộc thi, các thí sinh sẽ thể hiện khả năng phân tích vấn đề để đánh giá đúng tình hình hoạt động của doanh nghiệp, nghiên cứu thông tin và thảo luận nhóm để đề ra giải pháp giúp doanh nghiệp nâng cao hiệu quả hoạt động và tăng khả năng cạnh tranh trên thị trường khu vực và thế giới.

Cuộc thi đã thu hút sự chú ý của sinh viên Việt Nam và cả sinh viên quốc tế, với tông cộng 148 đội (563 cá nhân) đăng ký dự thi từ các trường đại học ở Singapore và Việt Nam. Qua vòng sơ loại với yêu cầu đề ra giải pháp ngắn, 20 đội từ 135 đội nộp đề án đã được chọn vào vòng Bán kết Thử thách 24 giờ. Tại vòng Bán kết diễn ra tại Đại học Quốc gia Singapore, các đội đã tiến hành phân tích tình huống, nghiên cứu và đề ra giải pháp doanh nghiệp cho các công ty Vinamilk, VNG, PNJ và Becamex IDG. Sau phần thuyết trình trước hội đồng Ban giám khảo, 8 đội có các giải pháp thuyết phục và xuất sắc nhất đã được thông báo vào vòng Chung kết. Trong hai ngày 15,16/12, 8 đội đã tham gia chuyến khảo sát thực tế tại 4 doanh nghiệp, tiếp xúc với ban quản trị, tìm hiểu thực tiễn điều kiện doanh nghiệp và các quyết định kinh doanh để tăng tính khả thi của giải pháp. Sau chuyến khảo sát, 8 đội đã thuyết trình giải pháp hòan thiện trước ban quản trị doanh nghiệp và nhận được ý kiến đóng góp từ ban quản trị.

Vào ngày 18/12, buổi Chung kết Thách thức trẻ Ychallenge sẽ diễn ra tại Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, với sự có mặt của 8 đội, sinh viên các trường, đại diện báo chí và Giám đốc/đại diện 6 doanh nghiệp tài trợ (ngân hàng Đông Á, 4 công ty tham gia đề thi ở trên và công ty cố vấn McKinsey). 4 đội với số điểm cao nhất được xướng tên sẽ thuyết trình giải pháp trước hội đồng doanh nghiệp và cộng đồng sinh viên trí thức trẻ. Ngòai ra sẽ có phần giao lưu giữa các đội, các bạn sinh viên và ban giám đốc các doanh nghiệp, và phần thảo luận chuyên đề về tuyển dụng nhân tài người Việt ở trong và ngòai nước. Chương trình sẽ kết thúc bởi phần phần bế mạc, chia sẻ về Ychallenge và trao giải 1000 đôla Singapore cho 4 đội thắng cuộc.

Thông qua việc tổ chức cuộc thi hàng năm, Ychallenge không chỉ mong muốn tạo ra nền tảng thúc đẩy trao đổi tri thức và kinh nghiệm thực tế của các sinh viên trí thức mà còn mong muốn góp phần nhỏ vào sự đổi thay của nền kinh tế thông qua việc đem lại các giải pháp thiết thực, tạo ra cầu nối giữa các doanh nghiệp tại Việt Nam và các tài năng trẻ ở nước ngoài.

Dr. Adel Dimian Associate Professor of Strategic Management (Practice), Singapore Management University Former Vice President, 3M Health Information Systems   Adel F Dimian is Practice Associate Professor of Management in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business. He recently joined SMU after serving nearly 19 years with 3M in varied and increasing responsibilities in technical and business management for worldwide.  A talented scientist he was awarded 9 patents for novel chemistry solutions. He is a certified six sigma black belt and master black belt. Adel spent 3 years based in Singapore as a regional business development manager responsible for 3M’s Asia electronics portfolio. Prior to moving back to Singapore and joining SMU, he was appointed vice president and general manager for 3M’s healthcare IT compliance business in New York City. Adel has worked in the healthcare, memory technology, commercial brand identity and graphic design, IT, and electronic market segments.  He received his formal education in the sciences, liberal arts, and business administration earning a BS, MS and PhD degrees in chemistry, and an MBA with honors from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His expertise involves strategy, innovation, process improvement and general management.

With the supports from Assoc. Prof. Adem Dimian, and the partnership with SMU Case Writing Initiative, we are looking forward to a more successful Ychallenge 2012, as well as more initiatives towards our vision.

You may be wondering why we took so long to release this note… It is because it is so hard to announce that there will be only 8 teams to proceed to the final round after seeing all the hard work and efforts all teams put in during those hectic and stressful 24-hours at NUS Business School last weekend 03-04 December 2011

We understand there are still a lot of shortcomings that we need to take into consideration in order to make your experiences during 24-hour challenge more comfortable and memorable. Yet, we believe that you all have had a fun time cracking the case within the tight schedule and mid-night craving for food as well as enjoy challenges answering probing and intriguing questions from our committed Board of Judges. The weather may not be so supporting with the prolonged rain. The rooms may be a little bit too cold without “proper” place to sleep. The food may be a bit dull sometimes…. and a lot more, you name it…….. Yet despite all of that, the 20 teams have proved their perseverance, academic excellence as well as creativity and business insights to come up with proposals that awe the audience on Sunday, the fourth of December 2011….

But anyway, let’s not prolong this moment any further… Let’s put our hands together to welcome the Eight whose presentations shone above all with, perhaps, a little bit sharper in analysis or more comprehensive in their approach or articulate in their delivery of the content and answering questions… The Eight are:

Continue reading »]]> THÔNG CÁO BÁO CHÍ THÁCH THỨC TRẺ YCHALLENGE 2011 TRẢI QUA VÒNG BÁN KẾT  SINGAPORE – Đầu tháng 12 năm 2011 vừa qua, vòng bán kết cuộc thi Thách thức Trẻ Ychallenge 2011 đã chính thức diễn ra tại Đại học Quốc gia Singapore với sự tham gia của 20 đội dự thi (77 thành viên) đến từ các trường, học viện ở Việt Nam và Singapore. Trải qua hai ngày làm việc liên tục từ ngày 3-4/12, cuộc thi đã tìm ra được 8 đội với ý tưởng và phần trình bày xuất sắc nhất tiếp tục đi vào vòng Chung kết. Vòng bán kết ngòai sự cổ vũ của các bạn sinh viên Việt Nam tại Singapore còn nhận được sự ủng hộ của các chuyên gia ưu tú trong Ban giám khảo và đặc biệt là sự góp mặt của ban giám đốc Ngân hàng Đông Á, Vinamilk.  Sau khi hòan tất phổ biến nội quy và cách thức cuộc thi, sáng ngày 3 tháng 12, các đội đã được đưa vào các phòng riêng biệt, nhận đề và bắt đầu tham gia phân tích giải quyết tình huống. Các đội thí sinh từ Hà Nội và Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh sau một ngày nghỉ ngơi từ chuyến bay đến Singapore vẫn giữ vững nhiệt huyết và tích cực thảo luận các vấn đề đưa ra trong tình huống doanh nghiệp. Trong vòng 24 giờ từ sáng ngày 3/12 đến sáng ngày 4/12, 20 đội dự thi đã tích cực nghiên cứu đề thi, tìm kiếm các nguồn thông tin, thảo luận nhóm và đưa ra các hướng giải quyết thiết thực nhất cho các vấn đề doanh nghiệp. Ngòai việc phân tích tìm kiếm ý tưởng và hướng giải quyết sáng tạo, các đội còn phải tự kiểm soát thời gian và phân chia công việc hợp lý để hòan thành ý tưởng theo đúng thời gian quy định và chuẩn bị phần thuyết trình. Để các đội dự thi tập trung vào việc giải đề, Ban tổ chức đã cố gắng đảm bảo các điều kiện cần thiết như cung cấp miễn phí tất cả các bữa ăn, hỗ trợ các vấn đề về kỹ thuật, phòng của các đội đều được trang bị điều hòa và máy chiếu… Đến sáng ngày 4 /12, các đội bắt đầu nộp bài và chuẩn bị thuyết trình trước Hội đồng ban giám khảo và khách mời. Tinh thần nhiệt huyết và quyết tâm cao độ được thể hiện qua 20 phần trình bày sáng tạo của 20 đội dự thi. Mức độ am hiểu về tỉnh huống, tính sáng tạo trong ý tưởng, tính chuyên nghiệp trong phần trình bày là các tiêu chí quan trọng trong việc đánh giá phần dự thi của các đội. Tối ngày 4/12, 8 đội dự thi với 8 ý tưởng và phần trình bày xuất sắc nhất đã được công bố lọt vào vòng Chung kết. The Ychallenge has come over 1/3 of its journey, and we know that you have put a lot of efforts in joining with us from Preliminary Round. 

With 135 Teams (close to 600 participants) our competition is probably the biggest & most competitive business case competition that I’ve ever known.

Sinh viên ở Singapore về Việt Nam đấu trí

Năm nay, những du học sinh năng động của Yplatform không chỉ  triển khai ý tưởng cuộc thi kinh doanh ở Singapore mà còn về Việt Nam, cùng khảo sát những vấn  đề kinh tế thực tế  ở các doanh nghiệp và đem kết quả đi đấu trí tại cuộc thi chung kết diễn ra tại thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.  

Những đội chơi xuất sắc

Đây là năm thứ 3 liên tiếp kể từ khi thành lập, Yplatform được coi là nền tảng chung- nơi các bạn trẻ Việt Nam có thể thảo luận các ý tưởng mang tính cộng đồng của mình, tìm kiếm những thành viên cùng chí hướng và nhận sự giúp đỡ cũng như bảo hộ từ những thành viên khác có kinh nghiệm- đã tổ chức 3 cuộc thi lớn về kinh tế ở Singapore.   

Sau cuộc thi hùng biện trẻ  2009 và Diễn đàn tuổi trẻ năm 2010 chia sẻ nhiều vấn đề thuộc nhiều lĩnh vực như kinh tế, giáo dục, xã hội,… năm nay, cuộc thi của Yplatform mang tên Thách thức trẻ YCHALLENGE 2011 đi hẳn vào lĩnh vực kinh tế.  

Các bạn trẻ đã không dừng ở những cuộc hội thảo có sự tham gia tư  vấn, đánh giá của các chuyên gia kinh tế lớn. Thách thức trẻ YCHALLENGE 2011 được tổ chức rất bài bản và thống nhất qua từng vòng thi. Nội dung cuộc thi chính là những tính huống doanh nghiệp. Hai mươi đội chơi đến từ các trường ĐH, học viện trong nước và du học sinh Việt ở Singapore đã tham gia vòng bán kết ở ĐH Quốc gia Singapore.  

Trong vòng 24 giờ từ sáng ngày 3/12 đến sáng ngày 4/12, 20 đội dự thi đã tích cực nghiên cứu đề thi, tìm kiếm các nguồn thông tin, thảo luận nhóm và đưa ra các hướng giải quyết thiết thực nhất cho các vấn đề doanh nghiệp. Kết quả, 8 đội xuất sắc nhất đã vào chung kết và trở về Việt Nam chuẩn bị cho ngày đấu trí cuối cùng 18-12.

8 đội tham gia chuyến khảo sát thực tế doanh nghiệp tại Bình Dương và TP.HCM ngày 15-16/12 để phát triển ý tưởng và sau cùng thuyết trình giải pháp hòan thiện trước Hội đồng doanh nghiệp vào ngày diễn ra chung kết cuộc thi.  Thách thức trẻ YCHALLENGE 2011 là tiếp nối của  Diễn đàn tuổi trẻ YSummit ra đời sau khi các du học sinh tham gia các hoạt động liên kết các trí thức trẻ Việt Nam tại Singapore của nhóm Vietnam2020- Hiệp hội chuyên gia Việt Nam tại Singapore do ông Võ Tá Hân sáng lập. YSummit được các bạn trẻ hi vọng sẽ thúc đầy trao đổi tri thức giữa người Việt trẻ ở nước ngoài với doanh nghiệp trong nước, và là nơi hiện thực hóa những ý tưởng táo bạo cho cộng đồng và xã hội của các bạn trẻ.

As most of our contestants are busy “cracking” their heads with Prelim Case about ML1, we would like to share with you some information on the APA refrence style that we are using for our competition format.

(Note: Ychallenge has its own writting format requirements but adopted the reference style from APA)

In a very short summary, APA reference style has following appearance:

1. This is how the citations look like in your content:

“Prevalence rates of antenatal major and minor depression have been estimated in community-based studies to range from 7% to 15% of all pregnancies” (Grote, Swartz, Geibel & Zuckoff, 2009, para. 2).

Or:

Arnett (2000, as cited in Claiborne & Drewery, 2010) suggests there is an emerging adult stage in the lifespan of humans, covering young people between the ages of 18 and 25 years

• 1.5 line spacing on A4-sized paper (21 cm x 29.7 cm / 8.27 inches x 11.69 inches)

• Solution content is within 2 A4 pages.
• Reference list & all other supporting items are in an additional Appendix (2 pages maximum).

Greetings from us again! We have been holding up our breadth (with much difficulty, perhaps, as we are too excited as well) not to reveal to you all the exciting “titbits” we have in store for you! Now is a few more days till the registration deadline and we think that it is high time we revealed … bit … by … bit (isn’t that makes the journey more … provocative?) what awaits you in the first round of challenges……

In the first wave, we will present to you one situation that faces the management of a business in Vietnam in their daily operations and challenge you to tackle not only the issue on the surface itself but also, with some creativity, how to solve the problem in a sustainable manner i.e. preventing it from emerging again. You will not have much space to present your idea so be concise and make your points within two pages. And then, the one or two-page appendix is the place for you to includeanything that supports your answer so be creative here

You and your team will have roughly one week to crack the case.

For teams in Singapore, particularly those still in school, we know that the beginning of November is a hectic period for you in terms of project deadlines and examinations. Therefore, we have designed the case in such a way that it will not require much additional research from you but rather challenge you to think critically and creatively within the context provided. Of course, further research will help sharpen your proposal and bring it closer to life.

For teams with majority as Singaporean/international members, we recommend that you start reading on business culture and practices in Vietnam so that you can tailor your answers to suit the reality here. Often times, these soft components do matter.

For teams in Vietnam, perhaps you can start preparing by refreshing your knowledge in some basic concepts in marketing, finance, supply chain, logistics etc… in English, which will come in handy.

Now, you may wonder how your teams can compete without having members with prior exposure to business concepts. Don’t worry. We always say that this competition welcomes energetic youths from all walks of life and we mean it. We assure that only basic understanding of those concepts is required. So if you start reading up on them now or a bit later before the challenge starts, we are sure you can catch up in no time! In fact, the diversity of your team backgrounds will be an asset should you proceed to the next round as the main cases developed with our partners will challenge you beyond business savvy.  

Hope that we have not revealed too much and destroy the fun. We’d like to conclude this note with a quote from Abraham Lincoln, which goes “If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend six sharpening my axe.”  Have fun sharpening your axes and you’ll see your tree soon enough! ^.^

Chính thức khởi động từ ngày 15/10/2011, Thách thức Trẻ Ychallenge 2011 là cuộc thi giải quyết tình huống đầu tiên dành cho sinh viên và các bạn trẻ đang học tập và công tác tại Singapore cũng như ở Việt Nam nhằm tạo cơ hội cho các bạn áp dụng kiến thức và kỹ năng của mình vào việc giải quyết các vấn đề kinh doanh hiện nay của các thương hiệu danh tiếng Việt Nam như Vinamilk, trang sức Phú Nhuận PNJ, ngân hàng Đông Á,…

Cuộc tranh tài diễn ra qua 3 vòng: vòng sơ loại diễn ra online, vòng Thử thách 24 giờ tại Đại học quốc gia Singapore (NUS), và Vòng chung kết kết hợp với chuyến đi thực tế 4 ngày tại Bình Dương và TP. Hồ Chí Minh. Ba đội thắng cuộc với ba đề án giải quyết thuyết phục nhất sẽ nhận được phần thưởng trị giá SGD $1000 mỗi đội và cơ hội thực tập và làm việc tại các công ty đối tác kể trên của chương trình.

Cuộc thi được tổ chức bởi Yplatform, nhóm du học sinh và trí thức trẻ Việt Nam tại Singapore dưới sự dẫn dắt của các giáo sư và chuyên gia ưu tú Việt Nam tại Singapore như bác Võ Tá Hân, thầy Vũ Minh Khương, bác Albert Antoine.. với tâm huyết tạo một môi trường cho giới trẻ Việt Nam đóng góp vào sự phát triển chung của đất nước qua những hành động thiết thực.

Some of you may notice that we require you to submit your CV/Resume when register for our Competition. That’s a crucial step for us to shortlist all registrants for the Preliminary Round, help the individual registrants to form teams, match the teams with the suitable companies and bridge all to many career opportunities awaiting you during and after this event.

A large number of our participants are still studying and writing CV/Resume may not be familiar with them yet, therefore, in this Note-series I have collected some tips on how to write a resume for your reference.

Of course, there are many ways you could write your CV/Resume & you can find tons of information in the internet about it. So I will share what I think is useful tips, and we can discuss more here.

In general: a good CV/Resume have preferably not more than 2 pages, including clearly your objectives, your education + relevant achievements & experiences to the job (or in this case the Competition) that you apply to.

7 tips for writing your résumé

A résumé can make or break your bid for that dream job. Yet so many jobseekers make common mistakes that can be easily avoided when writing their résumés. Here are some tips on how to compose a résumé that will impress prospective employers and set you apart from your peers.

1) List your achievements in school and at work

Do not leave out any detail that makes you an attractive candidate. Organise your list in a chronological order, starting from your most recent achievements. However, make sure than your résumé is not longer than necessary. As a rule of thumb, fresh graduates should not have résumés that are longer than two or three pages.

2) Emphasise relevant strengths

Using the same résumé for all your job applications is lazy and works against you. Take the effort totailor your résumé to each job application. Highlight and elaborate on your strengths that are relevant to the job, but be concise and avoid repetition.

3) Adopt simple layout & design

Go for a clean and uncluttered layout. Use tables and bullets to break down long paragraphs. Also use subheads such as “Employment Background”, “Academic Qualifications” and “Referees”. Avoid adding fancy pictures to your résumé.

4) Use good language

Stick to a formal tone, and present yourself as a professional with a good command of English. In addition, use positive statements and back them up with relevant facts where possible. For example, “I succeeded in improving sales by 120%” will sound more impressive than simply “I improved sales”.Avoid big words when simple ones that convey the same meaning are available.

5) Stick to deadlines

Missing the deadline for submitting your résumé is equivalent to eliminating your eligibility as an applicant. On the other hand, a résumé that is submitted early will be seen early by employers. It also signals your motivation and drive, since you took the effort to beat other candidates to the application.

6) Be smart

You are not explicitly required to list your reasons for leaving your previous jobs, unless requested otherwise. But if you wish to include them, ensure that they are appropriate and that you do not sound bitter about the departure. Even if you did suffer a hard time in a previous job, try to find something good to say about it. Otherwise, it’s a better idea not to say anything at all.

7) Check for errors

Get someone to proofread the résumé for you. You will be surprised by how others can spot glaring mistakes that you fail to detect by yourself. Spelling and grammar mistakes damage your credibility and should be avoided at all costs.

If you are the one who, after some time in Singapore, is still stunned at the eye-drooling “banh xeo” from an aunti from your neighbourhood thinking: OMG, this thing can SELL in Singapore…

If you are the one who, while indulging yourself in the air-conditioned library surrounded by all the books you love and you need, starts recalling the hard time you had back in your hometown library and thinking how can Singapore library manages their supply chain so well? What could have been different for our libraries back home?

… then JOIN US!

4. WHY, THEN? Yeah, because more often than not, those thoughts pop up and then are lost in the maze of your nervous system after a day hungry and tired from school/work… NO, WASTE THEM NO MORE! LET THEM BE HEARD! Submit your ideas to Ychallenge QC, receive comments from the experts and your peers, and perhaps, we can do something about it later on! Remember the old saying? A jungle is not made of one tree…

But beyond that, what really differentiates Ychallenge from other contests that you have known is the Vietnamese touch with Vietnamese companies joining in the case that we would like to emphasize. Through Ychallenge, we aim to provide a conducive platform for like-minded individuals to network, to share, to discuss and to work together toward a common goal, which is to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese firms on the global market.

The challenge goes like this:

Preliminary round: each team of 4 selects its favorite industry from a given list and do research on a given question. Within 8 days, 16 teams with the highest scores will move on to the next ground.

Semi-Final Round: 24-hour Challenge - each team will be given a case of a company in its preferred industry (as identified in the first round). Within 24 hours, each team needs to come up with a proposal to the existing problem of that company and present it in front of the board of judges. The 8 most excellent teams will enter the Finale.

Finale: The eight teams (The Eight) will visit the mentioned businesses in Vietnam in 4 days (a field trip) and get the chance to interact with the management of respective companies to gain more insights of current issues facing these firms. The team should take this opportunity within this time frame to fine-tune their proposals from the 24-hour challenge, bringing them closer to reality and feasibility check. At the end of that week, The Eight will present their findings and suggestions to the companies’ management and at Ychallenge Finale to be organized in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) with audiences expected to be the larger business community there.

Besides the main challenges, other activities are in place to facilitate forming teams among individuals and exchanges of ideas between experienced judges and passionate participants.

There are 3 quick online challenges from August to September, the purpose of which is to bring up understanding of important macro issues facing Vietnam’s economy which requires in-depth analysis and creative solutions from participants. This process is purposely designed so that participants canfind like-minded partners to form teams for the main challenge. All ideas will go through a review process and receive personal yet critical feedbacks from top-notch experts in the relevant fields.

On top of that, winners of each quick challenge will get to lunch with our judges to communicate with them on a more personal and engaging level. And for those teams that make it to the 2nd round of the main challenge, personal coaching from our board of advisers will be provided.
